Partial Rewiring

Where part of the installation is sound, replacing only what needs replacing can be the sensible choice. We'll tell you honestly whether it is.

Typical partial rewires

Common examples include:

  • Kitchen circuits during a new kitchen fit
  • Extensions and loft conversions
  • Replacing unearthed lighting circuits
  • A single floor or part of the house
  • Supplies to garages and garden rooms

Checking what stays

Before we connect new work to old, we need to be satisfied the existing installation is suitable. That's why a partial rewire normally starts with an assessment of the rest of the system.

When partial is a false economy

If the remaining cabling is near the end of its life, a partial rewire just postpones a full one — and means opening up finished rooms twice. In that case we'll recommend a complete rewire instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is a partial rewire cheaper than a full rewire?

Usually, because there's less work. But if the rest of the wiring will need replacing soon, a full rewire can be better value overall.

Will a partial rewire need a new consumer unit?

Sometimes. It depends on the existing board and what's being added. We'll advise after seeing it.

Can you rewire just the kitchen?

Yes. Kitchen rewires are one of the most common partial jobs, often done alongside a new kitchen fit.
