House Rewiring

Rewiring is all we do. Complete and partial rewires for houses, bungalows and flats, planned around the building and the way you live in it.

A rewiring specialist, not a general handyman

Most electricians do a bit of everything. We concentrate on residential rewiring, which means we've seen most of what old installations can throw up — and we plan accordingly. Over 15 years we've rewired terraces, semis, detached houses and bungalows in all kinds of condition.

What a house rewire includes

Every job is quoted individually, but a typical scope looks like this:

  • New socket circuits, with extra sockets where you need them
  • New lighting circuits with earthed fittings and switches
  • Dedicated circuits for cooker, hob, shower and other large loads
  • A new consumer unit with appropriate protection
  • Main protective bonding
  • Testing, labelling and documentation on completion

Full or partial?

Not every house needs a full rewire. If parts of the installation are in good condition, a partial rewire can be the sensible option.

Read more about complete house rewiring and partial rewiring, or book one of our rewiring surveys if you're unsure.

Signs a house may need rewiring

  • Old fuse box with rewireable fuses, or a board with no RCD protection
  • Rubber, lead-sheathed or fabric-covered cables
  • Lighting circuits with no earth conductor
  • Scorch marks, warm sockets or a burning smell
  • Circuits that trip regularly or lights that flicker
  • Too few sockets, with extension leads everywhere
  • Round-pin sockets or switches on skirting boards
  • A history of DIY alterations nobody can explain

How the job runs

  1. 01

    Survey & quotation

We look at the installation, talk through how you use the house and send a written quotation.

  2. 02

    Walk-round & planning

Socket, switch and lighting positions are agreed room by room, along with the order of work.

  3. 03

    First fix

Floorboards are lifted, walls chased, back boxes fitted and new cables run. The old circuits are made dead.

  4. 04

    Making good

Chases are filled and floors refixed. Plastering follows where the quotation includes it.

  5. 05

    Second fix

Sockets, switches, light fittings and the consumer unit are connected.

  6. 06

    Testing & handover

The installation is tested, labelled and explained to you, with documentation on completion.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a full and partial rewire?

A full rewire replaces every circuit and the consumer unit. A partial rewire replaces part of the installation — for example the kitchen, an extension or one floor — where the rest is in suitable condition.

Do I need to move out?

Not necessarily. Many people stay in while we work room by room, though an empty house is quicker and less disruptive.

Will you replace the consumer unit?

On a full rewire, yes. On a partial rewire we'll advise whether the existing board is suitable.
