How Long Does a House Rewire Take?

The factors that decide how long a rewire takes, and how to plan around first fix, making good and second fix.

Duration depends on size, construction, occupancy and how the job is sequenced with other trades. We'd rather give you a realistic programme for your house than a generic number.

What takes the time

First fix — lifting floors, chasing walls and running cable — is the longest and most disruptive stage. Making good and plastering follow, and the plaster needs time before second fix and decorating.

An empty house is quicker than an occupied one because furniture doesn't need moving room to room and more areas can be worked at once.

Planning around it

If you're buying, a gap between completion and moving in is ideal. If you're renovating, rewiring should be scheduled after strip-out and before plastering.
