Does My House Need Rewiring?
Common warning signs that an electrical installation is dated, and why age alone doesn't decide whether a rewire is needed.
Age matters, but condition matters more. A well-installed 1980s system may still have years left; a 1990s system that's been butchered by successive DIY jobs may not.
Warning signs
Look out for an old fuse box with rewireable fuses, older cable insulation such as rubber or fabric, lighting circuits with no earth, scorched or warm sockets, frequent tripping, round-pin sockets, and extension leads used everywhere because there aren't enough sockets.
